V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex is a multi-purpose facility adjacent to a neighborhood park.

In 1913 African American children began attending Oklahoma Grove School; later moved into a school at the intersection of Walnut and Myrtle Streets; then on to Sullivan and Center Streets and again moved to the Center and E. Sevier Streets location.   In 1928 the school was named Frederick Douglass School.  The school song was written in 1931 by music teacher Bessie French. In 1951 the Douglass Elementary-High School was opened on Louis Street and closed on June 8, 1966 when students were assimilated into all white schools throughout Kingsport. Afterwards Douglass High School closed the City of Kingsport reopened the facility as a community center.  In 2010, after a major renovation, the 103,000 sq. ft facility was rededicated. Public art, a trophy case, restored Douglass High School auditorium chairs and a state historic marker are highlights of the facility that commemorate its rich history. The complex currently houses several non-profit agencies: Big Brother Big Sister, United Way of Greater Kingsport, The American Legion Post, ALS Association, Palmer Foundation, Upper East Tennessee Human Development agency, Neighborhood Service Center, Fresh Start, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Douglass Alumni Association, 211, Boys and Girls Club of Kingsport and Mountain Region Speech and Hearing. City of Kingsport offices are also located at the facility: Kingsport Parks and Recreation, Community Services and Human Resources

Rentals Spaces Available Include:

Douglass Community Room – Large carpeted room.  Maximum capacity 100 persons.  The room features an overhead projector, projection screen, historic memorabilia, access to an outside courtyard/ patio and flower garden, public art and a catering kitchen. Tables and chairs are provided.

Eastman Foundation Conference Room – Business style meeting space. Maximum capacity 40 persons.  The room features an overhead projector, electronic whiteboard, public art, large conference table and highback conference room chairs.

Howell Conference Room – Maximum capacity 10 persons.  The room is equipped with a table and chairs.  

Gymnasium 1 – Seating capacity 100. The gymnasium has a hardwood floor court, an electronic scoreboard, stadium bleachers and an adjacent game room area.  It is climate controlled and concessions are operated by Kingsport Parks and Recreation.The gymnasium is equipped for adult basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Dressing rooms/showers are available.

Gymnasium 2 – Seating capacity 200. The gymnasium has a hardwood floor court, an electronic scoreboard, stadium bleachers and a curtain divider.  It is climate controlled and concessions are operated by Kingsport Parks and Recreation. The gymnasium is equipped for adult basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Dressing rooms/showers are available.

Other The V. O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex parking lot may be rented for events and activities. Adjacent lighted greenspace, 2 lighted tennis courts and 2 picnic shelters are available for rental.   Children’s playgrounds, a SplashPad and a community garden are also located near the facility. Rental hours for the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex vary and the facility is closed on City holidays. Main Office hours for the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex are Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Tenants set their own operating hours.

Renaissance Center – Rental Facilities

The Kingsport Renaissance Center is a facility which serves the community as a center for the arts, community recreation, senior citizen’s activities, and as a facility for business meetings, parties, receptions, classes, showers, and day-long seminars with breakout rooms.

The Kingsport Renaissance Center, formerly the John Sevier School, was renovated in 1991 and now stands as one of Kingsport’s most prominent landmarks. It is an architect’s masterpiece and stands as a constant reminder of Kingsport’s history and as a reality of creative dreams. The Renaissance Center’s diversity makes it unique and truly a model that sets renovation standards by which all others can be measured.

The facility includes a 350-seat theatre, three-story sky-lit atrium, art gallery, gymnasium, meeting rooms and offices. Theatrical performances and concerts are scheduled in the 350-seat theatre throughout the year. The theatre is available for meetings and seminars and is an ideal facility for 200 people, with nearby breakout rooms, suitable for all day functions with or without meals. A variety of rooms are available for rent, as well as a three-story atrium that seats 50 on each level. The atrium is ideal for a registration and refreshment area for up to 200 people. This arrangement is ideal to incorporate along with the use of the theatre, room 239, room 310, and/or the art gallery.  The three levels of the sky-lit atrium lend themselves to various forms of gatherings. You may also want to provide refreshments for your event, either by bringing your own food or making arrangements with your favorite caterer. The Art Gallery on the second level is open to the public and features a different exhibit each month.  These displays are great to view during meeting breaks and performance intermissions.

Lynn View Community Center – Rental Facilities

Lynn View High School, Sullivan County, Tennessee, opened it’s doors to the first students in the fall of 1948, with the first graduating class crossing the stage in the spring of 1949. The school colors chosen were green and white, with the school mascot being the Lynx.

The new high school served the communities of Lynn Garden, Bell Ridge, West View, Fort Robinson, Cedar Grove, Bloomingdale and Orebank. The last graduating class crossed the threshold in the spring of 1980 and Lynn View ceased to exist as a high school. The facilities served as Lynn View Middle School until 2003. Tri Cities Christian School used the school until 2008. The City of Kingsport opened the facility as a community center in 2010.  The facility offers the Kingsport community several different uses and capabilities. A satellite branch of the Senior Center, meeting spaces, athletic leagues, summer camps and after school programs are just a few of the things offered at the center.   An exercise/equipment area, game room and gymnasium are also available for public use during designated times.

Rental Spaces Available Include:

Gymnasium – Maximum capacity 1,000 persons.  The gymnasium has a high school regulation size hardwood/parquet floor.  It is climate controlled, has stadium bleachers and an electronic scoreboard.  The gymnasium is equipped for adult basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Regular rentals are 2 hour minimum.

Football Field –  The natural turf,  lighted football field is high school regulation size.  It has grandstand bleachers, a PA system and an electronic scoreboard. Estimated grandstand seating capacity of 1,000. Regular rentals are a 2 hour minimum. Full service concessions are available (operated by volunteer organizations). The Pee Wee football program at Lynn View is operated by the Lynn View Sports Club. 

Baseball/Softball Fields – A dirt infield, fenced/unlighted baseball/softball field, LF/280’CF/210 RF and a dirt infield, fenced/unlighted baseball/softball field, LF/200’CF/190’ RF. The field has bleacher seating and an electric scoreboard. Full service concessions are available (operated by volunteer organizations). The Lynn Garden Sports Club operates youth baseball activities and leagues at the park.  

Meeting Rooms – Cafeteria – The room has a tile floor, a refrigerator and a warming/serving island with a capacity of 75 people.  Regular rentals are a 3-hour minimum and tables/chairs are provided. Multi-purpose Room – The room is a small meeting space with a capacity of 25 people. Regular rentals are a 3-hour minimum and tables/chairs are provided.

Other The Lynn View Community Center parking lot and green space may be rented for events and activities.

Rental hours for the Lynn View Community Center vary and the facility is closed on City observed holidays. Lynn View Park is open dawn to dark, except when scheduled for events.

Kingsport Farmer’s Market Pavilion – Rental Facilities

The Kingsport Farmers Market Pavilion was first opened on August 3, 2012. In addition to the weekly Kingsport Farmers Market, it is a ‘mixed use’ space used for all sorts of events by the city and the general public.

It is rented out to the public on an ‘AS IS’ basis only. A limited number of chairs and tables are available for use, set up and break down of chairs and tables or other items is the responsibility of the party renting the space. We cannot guarantee the number of tables/chairs that are available. If you need more, it is recommended that you rent them. Restrooms are available. Access to the back hallway, party room and upstairs is prohibited. Trash cans and trash bags will be provided but it is the responsibility of the renter to move trash from facility to property dumpsters at the end of the event as well as the cleaning of the facility and parking lot.

Borden Park – Rental Facilities

Borden Park is a 17 acre neighborhood park with many recreation components.

Rental Spaces Available Include:

A multi purpose building – This facility has a tile floor, restrooms and game tables.  Tables and chairs are provided for events. Borden Park building rental times vary.

Picnic shelters – 2 – 48’ x 22’ shelters with 2 picnic tables and an outdoor grill, 4 – 22’ x 22’ shelters with 1 picnic table and an outdoor grill and 1 – 44’ x 20’ shelter with 3 picnic tables and an outdoor grill.

Tennis courts –  Shelters and tennis courts that are not reserved are available to the public on a first come basis.

An arboretum, barbecue grills, a children’s playground, an 18-hole disc golf course, outdoor restrooms and/or port-o-lets, park benches and a paved walking trail are also available at the park.

Borden Park is open daily dawn to dark, except when scheduled for events.

Allandale Mansion – Rental Facilities

Allandale Mansion is Kingsport’s White House.  It is a magnificent location for any special day.  Whether it is a wedding, civic event, family gathering, group meeting, community gathering or party…. Allandale is the place to be.   Allandale was originally a private residence built for Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Brooks and designed by Allen Dryden, Sr.  The original estate encompassed several hundred acres and Mr. Brooks was well known for the prize winning black angus cattle raised there.  Upon his death in 1969, Mr. Brooks left his exquisite home, including many of its furnishings, to the City of Kingsport.  Several outbuildings and 25 acres were also donated with the Mansion.  Provisions of the donation stated that the house must be maintained in the same manner as when its former owners were alive and it must be devoted to public use. Today, Allandale holds true to the wishes of the Brooks family by providing an elegant gathering place and quality services to customers.  In addition to the services provided through the City of Kingsport, Friends of Allandale support many endeavors to enrich Allandale.  Together they are committed to making sure Allandale’s rich history is preserved and that this community facility will always be a source of great pride for Kingsport. Allandale Mansion – The heart of Allandale is a Georgian Style mansion with many different size rooms.  The living room, dining hall, music room and library are all suitable spaces for events.  The facility is equipped with a full-service catering kitchen, an elevator for access to the second floor, loading zones, elegant furnishings, a grand staircase, player grand piano and multiple restrooms.

Courtyard – Adjacent to the main mansion is a beautiful outdoor courtyard and garden area.  The space has ornamental landscaping and a small fountain.  It is easily accessible and is an open area.

Front Lawn – Allandale’s sprawling front lawn is available for special activities, exhibits and event parking.

Heron Dome –  This facility, donated by Harry Coover, is located directly behind the courtyard.  The dome has an intricate design and features a beautiful heron sculpture fountain.  Ornamental landscaping surrounds the dome.  Estimated seating capacity is 200.

Gazebo – Located near the ponds and picnic area, is an open column style gazebo.  A brick pathway leads to the Gazebo and ornamental landscaping surrounds the site.  Events can be held inside the Gazebo or on the adjacent grass space.  Estimated seating capacity is 250.

Barn – This restored rustic facility has space for activities on the lower level and in the upper loft.  The barn is equipped with electricity, ceiling fans, decorative lighting, restrooms, dressing rooms, a basic catering space and a small stage in the loft.  Adjacent to the barn is a picnic area and garden gazebo.  Maximum capacity is 175 persons.

Pavilion – Adjacent to the two estate ponds is a covered pavilion.  This former barn space has been restored.  It now features a beautiful lawn setting near a pond, ornamental landscaping, picnic tables, ceiling fans, ornamental string lights, electrical hookups, water, separate restrooms and a drive up/drop off space. Maximum capacity is 175.

Amphitheater – This special venue was built by the Friends of Allandale and mirrors the architectural style of the mansion.  It has an open flat stage with tiered front steps, a dressing room, grass lawn seating, access to electrical hook ups for stage lighting/sound and open lawn seating on a gentle slope. Estimated seating capacity is 1,500 – 2,000.

Other – Tables, chairs, pianos, and other equipment/furnishings are available for rental. Rental hours for Allandale vary and the facility office is closed on City holidays. Event parking is located at the front curved driveway and in designated grass areas. The Grounds of Allandale are open to the public dawn to dark, except when scheduled for events.

Civic Auditorium – Rental Facilities

Opened in 1940, the Civic Auditorium was designed to be the cornerstone of the Parks and Recreation program in Kingsport and has served that purpose since its creation.  The Parks and Recreation administrative offices along with the athletic office and maintenance staff are housed within the Civic Auditorium.  The history of the Civic Auditorium is rich.  From legendary country and bluegrass musicians to hometown heroes and Elvis, the stage of the Civic Auditorium has showcased the best entertainment. Today, the Civic Auditorium is a common place for meetings, exhibit shows, social events, festival activities and sporting activities.  The facility has multiple rooms of all sizes to rent for functions.  Many of the rooms have themed decor to commemorate Kingsport past and present.

Rental Spaces Available Include:

Main Auditorium 110’ x 70’ flat rubber material floor space with 15’ ceilings.  At one end of the room there is a 21’x 32’ elevated stage with motorized curtains.  The ceiling lights have dimmers.  An outside marquee may be rented to promote events in the Main Auditorium.  Regular rentals are an 8 hour minimum and include tables/chairs at no extra cost.  Exhibit rentals are an 8 hour minimum and additional fees are charged for tables/chairs. Other types of rentals have variable limits and provisions. Maximum Capacity: 800 for theater and concert style events, 500 for table and chair events or dinners, 56 – 8’x10’ exhibit booths. The floor is also striped for recreation level basketball and tennis courts.  Portable basketball goals and tennis net are available.

Meeting Rooms

Conference Room – maximum capacity 75 persons.  39’ x 24’. The Conference Room is carpeted, has a white board/markers and a pull down screen. Tables and chairs are provided.  No food or drink are allowed in the room.

East Room – maximum capacity 80 persons. 36’ x 41’. The East Room has a concrete floor, outside access and restrooms.  Tables and chairs are provided.

FunFest Room – maximum capacity 40 persons. 35’ x 17’. The FunFest Room has a wall mural showcasing the hot air balloon event during the summer festival.  Posters and memorabilia from past FunFests are also displayed in the room.  Tables and chairs are provided.

History Room – maximum capacity 35 persons. 36’ x 15’. The History Room has a beautiful wall mural, painted by Suzanne Justice, depicting the History of Kingsport.  Tables and chairs are provided.

Room 3 – maximum capacity 20 persons. 23’ x 17’. Tables and chairs are provided.

Room 4 – maximum capacity 10 persons. 11’ x 17’. Tables and chairs are provided.

Rooms 3 & 4 Together – Room 3 and Room 4 are divided by a partition wall which can be opened to allow rental of both rooms together. Maximum capacity of Rooms 3 & 4 combined 40 persons. Tables and chairs are provided.

West Room – maximum capacity 100 persons. 36’ x 41’. The West Room has a sealed concrete floor and is easily accessible to an outside loading ramp. Tables and chairs are provided.

Other The Main Hall and other meeting rooms may be rented together and/or individually. The Civic Auditorium parking lot may be rented for events and activities. Green space adjacent to the Civic Auditorium parking lot may be rented for events and activities.  The green space has electrical connections. Rental hours for the Civic Auditorium vary and the facility is closed on City holidays. Office hours for the Civic Auditorium are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
